DNC Hits Denver!

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

It is only Sunday and we have already had a memorable day here in Denver as the DNC festivities are under way. We are volunteering this week at the Electric Vehicle Rolling Showcase which is part of the Green Frontier Fest. Located at the New Energy Station at Champa and Speer you can learn about electric cars and even have a chance to ride in one. The event is being held by Nate Vanderschaaf a delegate who has a strong passion for environmental issues and feels electric vehicles are the only logical pathway to clean air, energy independence, and freedom from high gas prices.

Actress Daryl Hannah a longtime supporter of the eco movement was on hand today at the Green Frontier Fest. When she needed a ride back to her hotel team Fling it Girl was at the right place at the right time and had the opportunity to drive her there in the RAV4 EV. We picked up Daryl and her publicist in a back entrance to an undisclosed building (I actually have no idea what building it was). She jumped in with a coconut shell filled with ice cold coconut milk and sipped it as she talked to us just like anyone else would. For the short time we spent together she came off as sweet, laid-back, and real. When I had my picture taken with her I mentioned this blog and she said she has a blog too called dh love life. It was really cool to meet her and awesome to see a celebrity who is passionate about making a difference.

What a fun and eventful day! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store. Team Fling it Girl will be out and about to bring you as much footage as we can. Follow us throughout the week by checking out our twitter stream.

eConscious Market: Giving. It’s The New Getting.

Some companies like to talk the talk. eConscious Market actually walks the walk. You hear a lot of about companies who claim they are the greenest of green but in reality it is hard to know if what they are providing is really making a difference. Most pledge what they are doing is helping the planet while they tend to forget about the people. It was refreshing to discover eConscious Market and see that there is a company out there vying to influence change. Mathew Gerson who founded eConscious Market happens to live in Boulder. We had the chance to sit down with him, his passion is undeniable and he has created an innovated way to make a real difference. His goal is to transform commerce into a philanthropic enterprise.

eConcsious Market purchases ecologically and socially responsible products and sells them at or below the suggested retail price. They know the greenest purchase you can make is none at all, so this next part is not to promote guilt-free over consumption rather it is to provide you with responsible options when you do need to purchase something. They donate 10% of all retail purchases to the charity of your choice. This transforms the act of buying from an individual gain into one that benefits the community. Giving. It’s the New Getting. That is their motto and if you ask me it sounds really good.
